Audience Effects Theory

Audience Effects Theory

1) Write a definition of a passive

A passive audience accepts and believes all messages in any media text that they receive

2) Write a definition of an active audience

An audience that Doesn't just mindlessly Accept everything they are told

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory

The Hypodermic Needle Theory is a linear communication theory which suggests that media messages are injected directly into the brains of a passive audience

4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: The Times newspaper
 > Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.

PERSONAL IDENTITY: Friends (TV Show)
 > Why: People can easily relate to the character as the show is aimed at people in from their teens to late 20's

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Ackley Bridge
 > Why: You can escape from your troubles at home and involve yourself with what's happening in the show

RELATIONSHIPS: How i met Your Mother
 > Why: You care about the characters and you keep watching so that  you can get the whole story

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs)

In The Clip from the blue planet 2, I can clearly identify that there is information and surveillance as blue story is a documentary about the ocean life.

Additionally i can infer that there are elements of VOYEURISTIC PLEASURE as you are watching what happens in ocean life from a birds eye view

Furthermore, when analysing the clip i could i identify pieces of VISCERAL PLEASURE as you are watching what the sea life do to each other and how they live their life
